James Dromgole Linton PRI 1840-1916

Linton was born on Boxing day 1840 in London. He was schooled at Barnes and then studied art at Leigh's School of Art Newham street. At the age of 23 (1863), he began exhibiting at the Dudley Gallery and then the Royal Institute, to which he was elected in 1870. In 1883 Linton became the Institute's first president and continued in the role until 1897. During  this period (1885) he was knighted for his services to the art world.

His working life started as a black and white illustrator for the Graphic, outside of this he produced works in both watercolour and oil. His work often is a stylised medieval genre similar to the Pre Raphaelites. His work hangs in all of the major public collections and all hold a wonderful sense of atmosphere.
